The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education held the National Hunting and Fishing Day Festival on Sept. 26. The day turned out to be gray and rainy, but turnout for the event was pleasantly surprising. Families, church groups, boy scouts and alternative outdoor schools were out in raincoats with their umbrellas, braving the weather and making up the approximately 400 people that attended the festivities.
The archery range had lines all afternoon and was the most popular activity of the day. Festival attendees also tried their skills on the BB range, had instruction in fly-casting, got to watch fly-tying, sampled simple outdoor cooking and game dishes, visited the Pisgah Hunt Camp created by Wildlife Management and checked out various wildlife foods found in the forests. They also learned various hunting strategies and predator calling from the Wild Turkey Federation.
