RALEIGH, N.C. (July 5, 2013) — As if reeling in seven trout during the June 1 “Troutacular” fishing event in Spruce Pine weren’t enough, 9-year-old Corey Buchanan also reeled in a unified lifetime sportsman license, courtesy of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and Neuse Sport Shop of Kinston, which donated the license.
Corey, of Spruce Pine, was the grand prize winner in a statewide random drawing for participants in 39 kids’ “Fish for Fun events,” which were held in May and June in celebration of National Fishing and Boating Week 2013.
Jaimee Yankow, of Jacksonville, was the first prize winner of a lifetime freshwater fishing license, donated by the N.C. Council of Trout Unlimited. Jaimee, 9, registered for the prize drawing at the Jacksonville Training Academy Youth Fishing Derby on June 8.
In addition to Corey and Jaimee, 150 other kids netted prizes — from rods-and-reel combos, tackle boxes and spools offishing line, courtesy of Neuse Sport Shop to mini tackle boxes and fishing hand towels from the Wildlife Commission. See a list of names, as well as the prizes won.
Corey’s unified lifetime sportsman license will let him fish and hunt in North Carolina for free for life — even if he moves out of state. The fishing and hunting privileges include fishing in all public waters — from trout fishing in mountain streams to surf fishing on the coast — as well as hunting for big game, hunting on game lands and waterfowl hunting.
Jaimee’s lifetime freshwater fishing license gives her fishing privileges in all public inland waters in North Carolina, including designated mountain trout waters, trout waters on gamelands and joint waters.
The Wildlife Resources Commission, along with Neuse Sport Shop, N.C. Council of Trout Unlimited, and the U.S. Forest Service, supported these free fishing events during National Fishing and Boating Week to promote fishing as a fun, outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy.
