FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (May 17, 2012) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering 11 fishing-related events, clinics and workshops this summer at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville. 

All are free and open to the public. For fishing events and clinics, loaner rods and reels are available free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis and bait is provided.

- June 2 – Youth Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This fishing event is open to children and their families as part of National Fishing and Boating Week. Register onsite the day of event.

  • -  June 6, 7, 8 – Three-Day Basic Rod-Building Course from 6:30-9 p.m. each night. This course, open to the first 15 registrants ages 14 and older, will cover the basics of building a fishing rod. Participants will make a rod to take home with them. Pre-registration is required.
  • - June 13 – Wounded Warriors Fly-Fishing Clinic from 1-5 p.m. This clinic is open to all soldiers, both active and retired, and their families.
  • -  June 15 – Fishing Lanyard-Making Course from 6-8 p.m. This course is open to all ages and provides instruction on how to make a fishing lanyard for the perfect Father’s Day gift. All materials are provided. Pre-registration is required.
  • -  June 16 – Father and Family Fishing Event from 9 a.m. to noon. This fishing event is open to children and their families in celebration of Father’s Day. Register onsite the day of the event. 
  • -  July 11 – Wounded Warriors Fly-Fishing Clinic from 1-5 p.m. This clinic is open to all soldiers, both active and retired, and their families.
  • -  July 21 – Fishing Skills Workshop: Soft Plastics Lure Making from 9 a.m. to noon. This basic skills workshop for all ages will cover the fundamentals of creating artificial worms, lizards, crayfish and other soft plastic baits. Pre-registration is required.
  • -  Aug. 8 – Wounded Warriors Fly-Fishing Clinic from 1-5 p.m. This clinic is open to all soldiers, both active and retired, and their families.
  • -  Aug. 15, 16, 17 – Three-Day Basic Fly-Tying Course from 6:30-9 p.m. each night. This basic skills workshop for all ages will cover the fundamentals of tying flies. Pre-registration is required.
  • -  Aug. 18 – Scout Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This fishing event is open to all Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts and covers the basics of fishing. Troop pre-registration is required.

-  Aug. 25 – Fishing Skills Workshop: Spinnerbait Lure Making from 9 a.m. to noon. This basic skills workshop for all ages will cover the fundamentals of creating spinnerbaits (bent wire arm lure with either single- or double-blade configuration). Pre-registration is required.

The John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is located at 7489 Raeford Road, across from Lake Rim. Wildlife Commission staff at the Pechmann Center conducts fishing workshops, events and clinics throughout the year. Most programs are free and open to the public.
