RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 1, 2005) – Give back to North Carolina’s wildlife this holiday season with a gift from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. From books to clothing to calendars, you can find the perfect gift for that hunter, angler or outdoor enthusiast on your holiday list. “Proceeds from each product go to support a correlating wildlife project or program,” said Theresa Castro, sales and marketing coordinator for the Commission. “For instance, money from the sales of the black bear documentary goes toward the Commission’s black bear program while the waterfowl stamp and print sale proceeds go directly into the Commission’s waterfowl fund, which supports waterfowl conservation projects in the state, such as pintail duck satellite tracking and habitat improvements and acquisitions.” The variety of wildlife-related products offered is as diverse as the programs and projects the Commission supports. New items are added on a continuous basis, Castro said.
For the aspiring ornithologist on your list, Birding North Carolina, provides detailed profiles of 44 birding sites in North Carolina. The 209-page guide ($16.96) includes birding-specific information, such as habitats present at each site, which birds are present at what times of year and best times to bird the sites, as well as maps and travel tips — including restrooms, food and lodging. Trout anglers will love the Trout Maps Book ($12), which features color-coded maps that give anglers a guide to fishing regulations on North Carolina’s trout streams. The book also shows the locations of game lands and state parks and provides information on universal access facilities for anglers with disabilities. Other popular products that make ideal stocking stuffers include:
“Like other products from the Commission, your purchase of a lifetime license will help fund wildlife conservation efforts that affect everyone,” Castro said. “Revenue from the sales of lifetime licenses is deposited into the Wildlife Endowment fund — from which only interest is used to pay for programs and projects that benefit fish, wildlife, habitats and people.” Since 1981, the Wildlife Commission has spent more than $32 million in interest on these programs and projects. A few of the projects include the construction of three education centers where the public can go to learn more about the state’s wildlife resources; the acquisition of more than 30,000 acres of game lands for hunting and other outdoor recreation; and the improvement of six fish hatcheries that now raise more than 8 million fish annually for stocking into public, inland waters.
