Wildlife Commission Seeks Public Comments
On Tar River Game Land Firearms Rule Change

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 29, 2005) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hear public comments Aug. 8 on a proposal to disallow centerfire rifles on the Tar River Game Land in Edgecombe County.

The public input meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the second floor Commissioners Room of the Edgecombe County Administrative Building, 201 St. Andrews St., Tarboro.

The Tar River Game Land is a 134-acre, state-owned tract encompassing upland pine stands, bottomland hardwoods, large clear-cut areas and lakes. Current rules allow hunting on the game land with any legal firearm.

The 19-member Wildlife Commission will take public comments into consideration when it makes a decision on the game land proposal at its Aug. 26 meeting. Written comments can be submitted to the Commission by 5 p.m. Aug. 9 to: Tar River Rule, 1724 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1724.

The Tar River Game Land is open for in-season hunting six days a week, except waterfowl hunting, which is limited in season to Tuesdays and Saturdays. The game land is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day.
