Wildlife Commission Plans Hunts for Disabled Sportsmen

RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 7, 2005) – The N.C. Wildlife Commission has scheduled a series of hunting opportunities for disabled sportsmen this fall. For more information about special hunt opportunities, permit draws or disabled sporting opportunities in North Carolina, consult the Special Hunt Opportunities booklet, available at wildlife license agents or online at www.ncwildlife.org.

  • Oct. 22 — Nash Gun Club, Halifax County. More than 4,000 private acres will be opened for a deer hunt for 12 disabled hunters. Deadline for applications is Oct 12, with the drawing on Oct. 14. Mandatory orientation and opportunity to scout for hunting locations will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 21.
  • Oct. 29 — Alan’s Wildlife Ventures, Halifax. Up to 10 disabled hunters may bring a companion on this deer hunt. The land, covered in woods and water, features more than 800 acres planted in corn, peanuts and soybeans. Apply for this hunt through any wildlife license agent — item 7200, hunt choice 1000. Unissued permits will go to point of sale for purchase by disabled hunters. A mandatory orientation and location scouting session will begin at 4 p.m. Oct. 28.
  • Nov. 3 — Honey Hill Shooting Preserve, Hallsboro, Columbus County. This pheasant hunt for 40 mobility-impaired hunters (defined as either confined to a wheelchair, permanently requiring the use of mechanical aids such as walkers or braces to walk or having one or more limbs amputated) will feature 100 pheasants released from a tower. Hunters in 10 stands surrounding the tower will rotate positions and stands until all birds have been released. Apply for the hunt through any wildlife license agent — item 7560, hunt choice 1000. Unissued permits will be open for sale to mobility-impaired hunters.
  • Nov. 5 — John Ray Eubanks Farm, Pollocksville, Jones County. Up to 10 disabled hunters may bring a companion for this deer hunt on 1,753 acres of restored wetlands. Fields are planted in corn, grain, sorghum, lespedeza and clover. Apply for the hunt through any wildlife license agent — item 7320, hunt choice 1000. Deadline for application is Oct. 15. Unissued permits will go through the point of sale system. A mandatory orientation and location-scouting session will begin at 4 p.m. Nov. 4.
  • Nov. 12 — Camp Lejeune, Onslow County. Up to 15 mobility-impaired hunters (for definition, see Nov. 3 event) may hunt deer with either a crossbow or shotgun with slugs on 3,000 acres of the U.S. Marine Corps base. Participants must wear both a blaze-orange cap and vest. A mandatory base registration, safety session and scouting of hunt locations will take place Nov. 11. Applications are due Oct. 13.
