RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 20, 2007) – With deer season in full swing across the state, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reminds hunters that improper use of tree stands greatly increases the chance of injury.

One fatality and two serious injuries involving falls from tree stands have been reported so far this year.

“Each of those accidents involved a homemade or self-constructed tree stand,” said Capt. Chris Huebner, hunting safety coordinator for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. “We recommend extra caution when using homemade tree stands. When using a manufactured tree stand, be sure to follow user instructions.”

Some basic guidelines for any tree stand situation:

  • Hunters should maintain three points of contact (hands and feet) when climbing up or down from a tree stand
  • Never carry anything when climbing – use a haul line to raise and lower an unloaded gun or other equipment once safely seated
  • Wear a full body harness, also known as a fall arrest system
  • Check all belts, chains and attachment cords before use
