General Terrain Characteristics: Upland-pine and hardwood forestland that forms a peninsula in Belews Lake.

General Location: Access from several state roads bordering or traversing the property. Travel from Brevard, N.C. east on U.S. 64 to Penrose, N.C. Take S.R. 1528 to S.R. 1130 and S.R. 1128 (Henderson County) for access to east side of property. Vehicle access is available on S.R. 1114 (Pinnacle Mountain Rd.) out of Hendersonville, N.C. Also from Brevard, N.C. travel south on U.S. 276 to Cedar Mountain, N.C. then take S.R. 1560 (Reasonover Rd.), which borders the property in several areas.

Camping Allowed: Camping is not allowed on the property, but there are several private camp-grounds nearby and National Forest campgrounds (Pisgah Ranger District) in Pisgah Forest, N.C.

General Terrain Characteristics: Habitat is southern Appalachian hardwoods intermixed with numerous stands of white pine plantations (Total of 900 acres). Trout fishing is available on several small and medium-sized trout streams. Small lakes located on the property offer panfish and largemouth bass. Terrain is mountainous with extensive hiking, bike, and horseback riding trails on property. Many trails are located on old logging roads making foot access generally good in most areas of the property.

Special Equipment and Planning Needs: In addition to normal hunting gear, the following items may be helpful:

• CAUTION—Extensive biking, hiking, and horseback riding trails and several large safety zones require prior knowledge of heavy public use areas. It is recommended that extensive scouting be completed prior to hunts to avoid high public use areas.

• GPS, binoculars, bicycle, topographical map, waterproof boots with lug soles, compass, game hauler, portable stand/blind.

Deer:

• Good white-tailed deer population for mountainous habitat and terrain. Numbers limited by lack of quality early-successional habitat.

Turkey:

• Good wild turkey population. Numbers limited by lack of quality brood habitat.

Small Game:

• Small game species include ruffed grouse and gray squirrel. Grouse and rabbit/quail numbers limited by lack of early-successional habitat.

Disabled:

• ATV use is prohibited in DuPont State Forest.

• Limited disabled access behind closed gates on the property may be arranged by contacting DuPont State Forest at 828-877-6527. Disabled hunters should contact DuPont State Forest office at least two weeks in advance of the hunt date to obtain access information.

Other Information:

• Hunting on DuPont State Forest is by permit only. Training or using hunting dogs is prohibited, except during scheduled small game permit hunts for squirrel, grouse, rabbit, or quail. • Hunters may harvest an unlimited number of feral hogs, coyotes, and groundhogs during any of the permit hunting opportunities using the manner of take prescribed for the permitted species being hunted (deer, small game, turkey) as outlined in the Regulations Digest .
