Every Dollar Counts for State’s Wildlife Diversity Program

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 1, 2007) – When it comes to the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund, what you give counts twice.

It’s because the generous contributions to the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund help determine how much federal funding the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Diversity Program will receive.

In the past, federal funds had been provided as a three-to-one match. In other words, for every dollar the Commission got, federal funds matched it with $3. That match changes this year to a one-to-one ratio—for every $1 that North Carolina raises, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will only add $1.

“That reduction in matching funds makes the individual and family donations especially significant this year,” said Carol Price, the Wildlife Action Plan coordinator with the Commission. “People who love wildlife will make the difference for crucial species and habitats, with every penny they give.”

Making a contribution this time of year is easy. By checking line No. 26 on state income tax forms, anyone due a refund of $1 or more can donate any or all of it to the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund. If you are not eligible for a refund, but would still like to contribute, donations can be sent to: Non-game and Endangered Wildlife Fund, 1722 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1722. All donations are tax-deductible.

The success and challenges of the Wildlife Diversity Program will be featured in the Wildlife in North Carolina magazine in a five-article series, beginning with the March issue. The articles will highlight local and statewide conservation efforts, regional activities and statewide projects and partnerships.
