Wildlife in North Carolina Magazine Donated to Deployed Troops
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 9, 2007) – It’s a bit like word from home, with fur, feathers and fins. Thanks to the national nonprofit volunteer network “Give2TheTroops” and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, some deployed troops will receive copies of Wildlife in North Carolina magazine in their next care packages. Wildlife in North Carolina is an award-winning, family-friendly magazine. The official educational publication of the Wildlife Resources Commission, it is known for its exceptional color photography and compelling articles on hunting, fishing, natural areas, wildlife research and the state's environment. “The idea that our soldiers can open the magazine and those photos and stories can take them away and bring them back home – if only for a few moments – is gratifying,” said Barbara Whitehead, the state Give2TheTroops director. “The imagery of Wildlife in North Carolina provides our soldiers with a welcome break from all that brown in Iraq, whether it’s the mountains or the coast or in-between. It is truly appreciated. It never goes out of date.” From a warehouse in Raleigh, a shipment of 80 boxes – a total of 8,000 individual issues – was delivered to the regional collection depot in Greenville, to then be sent to military personnel far from home. “This was a welcomed opportunity for the entire staff, on behalf of the Commission,” said Greg Jenkins, the magazine’s editor. “We had made a similar contribution three years ago and were pleased to be able to do it again.” For view the current issue of Wildlife in North Carolina online or to subscribe, go to www.ncwildlife.org.
