This year, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission selected the monarch butterfly for its 2020 Wildlife Button. Typically, the button (see design sketch artwork) is distributed during the Mountain State Fair and North Carolina State Fair. Since both venues have been cancelled this year, the 2020 button will be given out at both fairs in 2021.
The monarch butterfly was selected not just for its beautiful color patterns, but due to its contribution to the health of North Carolina’s wildlife habitats. It is a key pollinator for various flowers around the state as well as a food source for birds, insects, lizards and other small animals.
Its role in North Carolina’s and our country’s ecosystem is critical. The conservation of monarch butterflies and all pollinators must be a national movement. Get involved and be a part of this conservation movement by:
- Planting milkweed and nectar plants that are native to our state.
- Garden organically, without using pesticides, to protect monarchs and other pollinators.
- Educate others about pollinators, including the monarch butterfly.
For more information on planting a pollinator garden, visit the U.S. Forest Service webpage.

I would like to purchase a monarch button, if possible. I am a middle school teacher and we have planted a butterfly garden. I would like to support NC wildlife and be the proud owner of this 2020 button to display on our learning garden bulletin board! Please let me know how to proceed! Thank you,

I'm sorry, but as of now we only have plans to give the 2020 button away at the Mountain State and N.C. State Fairs in 2021.

Maybe you should consider making these available for purchase to raise money for the NC Wildlife fund?
It would be a great way to raise money and also provide them to people who would like to have them, and since there is no fair this year. As a matter of fact, they should be available to purchase online every year to raise money, especially since there probably are very few people who will attend the state fair just to obtain one of these buttons. Thanks for your consideration.
