The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering a free blue catfish seminar on April 6, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville.

The seminar, “Fishing for Big Blues,” will be taught by Zakk Royce, a Murfreesboro angler who caught back-to-back blue catfish state records in December and who runs Blues Brothers Catfish Guide Service .

Among the topics Royce will cover are equipment selection, from what type of rod and reel is best for fishing for big blues to the different types of reels, line and line size, and terminal tackle.

He will discuss how to catch different types of bait, including live bait and cut bait, and how and under what circumstances should they be used. He will also cover the different types of structure favored by blue catfish as well as the techniques used to catch these often large and sought after nongame fish.

The seminar will wrap up with a question-and-answer session.

Space is limited and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information about the seminar, contact Pechmann Fishing Education Center Director, Thomas Carpenter at 910-868-5003.
