RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2018) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's Home From the Hunt campaign reminds hunters to be aware of their surroundings and positively identify their target before pulling the trigger.

“It’s easy to get excited when you get a deer in your sights,” said Chet Clark, the Commission’s eastern outreach manager. “But there may be homes, vehicles or people in front of or behind your target. Hunters should remember to practice safe firearm and hunting techniques and make absolutely certain that it’s safe to pull the trigger.”

The four primary rules of firearms safety are:

  • Always point a firearm in a safe direction.
  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded and never assume a firearm is unloaded.
  • Keep your finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Be sure of your target–and what’s in front of and behind it.

“Hunters should always use binoculars, not a rifle scope, to identify their target,” said Clark. “This way they can take aim only when they’re absolutely ready to fire. This small step can help ensure everyone comes home from the hunt safely.”
